Students Riding Bikes to School even in the Cold

The students at Mount Pleasant Academy continue to ride their bikes to school in surprising numbers. Even in the middle of winter the bikes rolling towards the neighborhood school, showing adults that there's more than one way to commute.

The picture posted here of the bike racks at the school was taken this week. And it doesn't even show all of the bike racks. I estimate that 50 to 60 bikes were parked at the school.

The layout of the neighborhood together with a few well-placed crossing guards make it pretty easy for anyone who lives South of Coleman Boulevard to ride (or walk) to school.

Ridership does drop off when it's pouring or when the temperatures dip below 32 degrees.

East Cooper EcoSpiel

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy and Water’s Edge Restaurant are inviting the public to a free and informal gathering titled “EcoSpiel”, to discuss the preservation of East Cooper’s natural character through land conservation and other sustainable living measures.

The event will be held at Water’s Edge Restaurant, 1407 Shrimp Boat Lane on Shem Creek from 6pm-7pm, Wednesday, January 27th. EcoSpiel is an opportunity to network with like minded community members and to hear brief presentations from local groups and businesses focused on the future of the natural environment in Mount Pleasant and East Cooper.

With the wide array of “green” groups and businesses in East Cooper, this informal social gathering is intended to raise awareness and provide a format for discussion about future collaborations that will help raise awareness and ultimately benefit the whole community. Additionally, the event is intended to offer community members the opportunity to voice their opinions and share their environmental vision for East Cooper.

Water’s Edge Restaurant will be offering complimentary light hors d’oeuvres and drink specials during the event. The Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy hopes this initial gathering will become the first of many regular events that bring together like minded community members interested in organizing their thoughts and efforts when it comes to protecting our local environment and ensuring future generations will be able to enjoy the same quality of life our natural surroundings provide each of us today.

The Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy (MPLC) is an independent nonprofit land trust that exists to protect land, natural resources and important civic open spaces in the East Cooper area.

Kai Dutton, a kindergarten student at Mt Pleasant Academy, was diagnosed with a sudden aggressive cancer that invaded various parts of his body including his stomach, spine and lungs. Immediate removal of the tumor near his spine was required, even though his parents were cautioned he may not walk again. Kai is beating the odds by shocking doctors when he started to walk again recently. With Kai’s strength and the help of a caring community, we can join together to help Kai battle Stage IV cancer.

After only a few weeks of beginning Kindergarten, Kai won the hearts of his teachers and classmates. When he was suddenly diagnosed with cancer, classmates and friends from Mount Pleasant Academy witnessed the agonizing hardship this remarkable family was enduring. To support Kai and his family through meals and financial assistance, friends from Mount Pleasant are organizing fundraising events to support Kai’s treatment.

Unable to enjoy many of the thrills of being a kid, Kai undergoes aggressive treatments instead.

Mt Pleasant Land Conservancy Boat Trip to Capers

Barrier Island Eco Tours has teamed up with the Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy (MPLC) for a very special boat tour. New contributors to the MPLC will be offered an exciting chance to explore the closest untouched barrier island to Charleston—Capers Island—during the MPLC fall donor drive. This is a great way for the community to show support for East Cooper’s home grown land conservancy with an immediate bonus opportunity to explore the natural beauty of this protected barrier island.

The Island Excursion to Capers Island State Heritage Preserve will take place on Sunday, November 15th from 1:00pm to 3:30p.m. The first 40 new or renewing donors of the Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy to register for the trip will be able to participate at no cost. The MPLC is able to offer this exciting nature tour thanks to the business sponsorship ofBarrier Island EcoTours. Robert Hopkins, Senior Captain of Barrier Island EcoTours and Environmentalist with the Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy will offer a personal, naturalist-guided tour for this exciting glimpse into South Carolina’s unique tidewater ecosystem.

The Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy is an independent nonprofit land trust that exists to protect land, natural resources and important civic open spaces in the East Cooper area. The MPLC has protected over 137 acres of land in Mount Pleasant this year and is currently working with several landowners on the permanent protection of more than 100 more acres in East Cooper. Contributions to the organization are tax-deductible and help with land acquisitions and stewardship of protected properties. Financial support from the community is critical to the continued preservation of East Cooper’s natural character.

In order to participate in the upcoming Island Excursion on Sunday, November 15th, you must become a donor to the Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy prior to the event. Tax-deductible annual contributions start at $35 for Individuals and $75 for Families. Individual donors receive one complimentary adult ticket. Family donors receive two complimentary adult tickets and two complimentary children’s tickets. Additional children (12 and under) cost $5/each.

Helping a Neighbor

There is a brave little boy in the neighborhood named Kai Dutton, a kindergarten student at Mt Pleasant Academy. Kai was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and is undergoing treatment at MUSC. The family is caring for him round the clock and the costs for treatment, not to mention lost time at work, are astronomical. A group of friends and family has gathered to support the Dutton family during this very difficult time. Learn more about Kai and how you can help here.
